Shifter School
by Gwendolyn Druyor

GENRE: Urban Fantasy

She’s gonna get them all killed.

So they locked her away.

Laylea has been hiding her entire life. She’s never been to school. She’s never had a friend her own age. She’s never known anyone else like her.

All that is about to change.

In a world hidden from wyrdos and humans alike, shifters are still recovering from a vicious plot to destroy them all. They have two laws they live by now:

1) Hide

2) Protect the children at all costs.

Laylea has just broken rule number one. But she’s only fourteen. So they’re sending her to school. Where she’s going to learn . . .

Anyplace can be a prison.

The Lincoln Park Shifter School is not your grandma’s uber-secret, underground academy.

A long, shrill scream drew Laylea back into the zoo. The guard who didn’t want to be called Beta was backing away from a tall black man in jeans, a button-down, and Fox sandals.

“Kyle!” Laylea screamed his name even as she heard KC screaming hers. “Kyle! You’re a good man! Think of Jeannie and KJ!”

The vampire looked her way. His familiar, affable smile appeared and he waved at her. “We’re just gonna have a talk. Get back to school, you reprobate.”

Then the smile melted away as though it had never been and Kyle stalked out of sight.

“Lee, come on.” KC yanked her out the entrance.

“No,” She tried to pull away but KC was strong. “I have to help him.”

“No one can help that guy now.”

Tears poured down Laylea’s face. KC was right. If Kyle had already killed a pack of werewolves, Laylea wasn’t going to be able to stop him from killing one guard. But she had to try. She hadn’t spent the last seven months hiding him from Dee and Morioka and everyone else just to give up on Kyle now. “I can.”

She yanked her arm out of KC’s grip and they both fell on the uneven steps of the plinth.

Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?
I wrote the novel for my fourteen-year-old cousin. She’s not enjoyed puberty thus far. She liked herself just the way she was, thank you very much, and doesn’t understand why she had to change. Laylea’s already chaotic life gets turned upside down in this story. She has to figure out how roll with it. My cousin was scared by the fact that when Laylea shifts between human and puppy, her clothes don’t shift. She didn’t like the nakedness. I think she should read the book to discover that the nakedness isn’t a big issue in a school of three hundred shifters with similar problems.

At fourteen, I was just realizing that I was different from everybody else I knew. I was a wyrdo. At forty, I’m just realizing that that’s true for everybody else as well. We are ALL different. The challenge and joy of life is figuring out how those differences can enrich all of our lives. In Shifter School, I use the physical differences of each type of shifter as well as how they were raised, what they believe, and what their core values are to

How did you come up with the title of your book or series?
I thought I’d go with simple and straightforward, not something I typically make a habit of. It’s a story about the Lincoln Park Shifter School, soooo, Shifter School. The next books in the series will be Shifter Blood, Shifter Witch, Shifter Moon, and Shifter Power.

Who is your favorite character from your book and why?
I’m fascinated by Ms. Crow. She is a much more complex character than I expected. She’s trapped and has given up ever saving herself. I think she’s going to be revealing a lot of surprises throughout the series.

How about your least favorite character? What makes them less appealing to you?
Jase Batka. He’s a jerk. He doesn’t need to be, he just is. He’s got this sense of superiority that is TOTALLY not deserved. How does being mean to Laylea benefit him?

Give us an interesting fun fact or a few about your book or series:
Some shifters get to keep their clothes when they shift while others spend a lot of time naked.

There’s a drug on the streets that lets thumpers (normal humans) experience certain shifter powers.

What's the strangest thing you have ever had to research online for your book?
Ohhhh, I learned about Incognito browsing when I had to search poisons and electrocution and hacking for my Killer on Call series.

Do you have any unique talents or hobbies?
I am an actor. I have narrated over 150 audiobooks. I started when a friend made me read a selection from one of my books in the lobby of his theater (to stall while they finished building the set!). Everyone in that lobby told me to narrate my own books. I had a blast doing it and since reading is my favorite pastime anyway, I started narrating others’ books. You can find most of them on Audible.

What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?
Please share your joy on social media and with your friends. Reviews make a big difference in getting a book in front of more eyes. Plus, I’ve populated an entire academy in the Shifter School series. I take names from my favorite reviews!

Is there anything else you’d like to say?
Thank you so much for having me here on your blog and helping me introduce Shifter School.

How to Spot a Synthetic

They look like us.  Act like us. But they’re not human.  Created in a lab to do the tasks humans can’t be bothered with, synthetics are custom built to serve.  But how can you tell if the menial behind the counter, the nanny watching over the children in the park, or the landscaper tending the flowers is one of us… or one of them?  Perhaps it’s best to let the marketing department at Walton Biogenics answer that question…
Excerpt taken from a recent Walton Biogenics advertising campaign…
Purpose Built.  Each synthetic is designed with care and precision to be perfectly suited to their intended use.  Through the application of extensive, patented genetic technology, we at Walton Biogenics have sculpted your new synthetic to the tightest specifications for the task at hand.  Laborers boast a significantly higher degree of muscle fibers; undercity workers conform to physical standards compatible with the tight quarters they must negotiate, and domestics bring a balance of pleasing aesthetics and readiness to serve in any way you see fit.
Works of Art.  At Walton Biogenics, we believe that a synthetic should be more than just a tool.  Aesthetics matter, and while form may follow function, we strive to make every synthetic a work of art.  Our dedicated focus to bilateral symmetry, classic lines, and appealing curves will ensure that your investment in one of our synthetics will not only get the job done, but will keep a smile on your face for years to come.
The Finest Programming.  We don’t just grow synthetics and ship them out the door.  When you purchase a Walton Biogenics synthetic, you can be sure that, in addition to being designed from the ground up to meet your needs, they have undergone extensive training and programming, so that they can handle any task within their design specifications.  But more than that, we make sure that every synthetic is capable of even more.  Whatever model you choose, they’ll come standard with a suite of skills guaranteed to cover your basic needs – and even some more exotic ones!
The Walton Biogenics Promise.  In modern times, it seems like nothing is built to last.  Walton Biogenics is here to change that. Our synthetics are guaranteed to work, period.  If you experience any problems or performance issues, simply take your synthetic to any one of our convenient service centers and you’ll be provided a replacement, free of charge, with no questions asked.  That’s our promise.

The New Lyons Sequence #2
by J.T. Nicholas

Genre: Science Fiction/Cyberpunk Noir

Pub Date: 3/20/2018

The Post-Modern Prometheus

Synths were manufactured to look human and perform physical labor, but they were still only machines. That’s what the people who used—and abused—them believed, until the truth was revealed: Synths are independent, sentient beings. Now, the governments of the world must either recognize their human nature and grant them their rightful freedom, or brace for a revolution.

Former New Lyons Detective Jason Campbell has committed himself to the Synths’ cause, willing to fight every army the human race marches against them. But they have an even greater enemy in Walton Biogenics, the syndicate behind the creation and distribution of the “artificial” humans. The company will stop at nothing to protect their secrets—and the near-mythological figure known to Synths as “The First,” whose very existence threatens the balance of power across the world . . .

The New Lyons Sequence #1

The Artificial Evolution

They look like us. Act like us. But they are not human. Created to perform the menial tasks real humans detest, Synths were designed with only a basic intelligence and minimal emotional response. It stands to reason that they have no rights. Like any technology, they are designed for human convenience. Disposable.

In the city of New Lyons, Detective Jason Campbell is investigating a vicious crime: a female body found mutilated and left in the streets. Once the victim is identified as a Synth, the crime is designated no more than the destruction of property, and Campbell is pulled from the case.
But when a mysterious stranger approaches Campbell and asks him to continue his investigation in secret, Campbell is dragged into a dark world of unimaginable corruption. One that leaves him questioning the true nature of humanity.

And what he discovers is only the beginning . . .

J.T. Nicholas was born in Lexington, Virginia, though within six months he moved (or was moved, rather) to Stuttgart, Germany. Thus began the long journey of the military brat, hopping from state to state and country to country until, at present, he has accumulated nearly thirty relocations. This experience taught him that, regardless of where one found oneself, people were largely the same. When not writing, Nick spends his time practicing a variety of martial arts, playing games (video, tabletop, and otherwise), and reading everything he can get his hands on. Nick currently resides in Louisville, Kentucky, with his wife, a pair of indifferent cats, a neurotic Papillion, and an Australian Shepherd who (rightly) believes he is in charge of the day-to-day affairs.

Opening the leather bag, he removed a smaller explosive device and a metal strap designed to hold it firmly in place beneath the bottom of the tank. The thick, blast-proof strap had tightening bolts at each end. By turning the bolts clockwise, Bell removed what little slack there was. When he could turn the bolts no further, the taut metal straps pushed the device firmly against the metal shell of the gas tank.

When he was finished and the leather bag much lighter, he paused before sliding out from underneath the vehicle. His intent was to exit from the same side he entered. But then he heard DeFaeo’s unmistakable voice.

He was trapped.

Bell could hear DeFaeo and Lenny disagreeing about some aspect of the new office. They came to a stop directly behind the rear liftgate.

“Boss, I’m only telling you what you already know.”

“Which is?” DeFaeo asked.

“The car is a safer place to work—all things considered.”

“Lenny, you’ve already made that argument. Let me see if I can recall? Oh yeah, we have a 360-degree field of vision. We can see anyone come and go. Right?”

DeFaeo was no more impressed with this argument now than when he first heard it. The irony wasn’t lost on Bell as he lay prone beneath the SUV and only feet away from both of them.

“Look, I’m hungry. We’re late as it is. Let’s go, now, please?”

Lenny lead the way to the rear passenger door. The car floor above Bell’s head crept an inch or so closer as DeFaeo’s weight was transferred to the thick, upholstered seat. Lenny closed the door and moved to the back of the vehicle on his way to the driver’s side.

Bell knew he had to make his move now, or risk being discovered—and worse.

As quietly as he could, Bell slithered to his right side—away from the garage’s exterior wall and in the direction of the Honda in the adjacent parking stall. Lenny opened his door and took his seat, starting the engine.

The engine noise prevented Bell from hearing the conversation inside the car. Lenny took the opportunity to look at his employer in the rearview mirror to continue his arguments against the new office space, but not before placing the transmission in reverse. The car lurched rearward for a foot, trapping Bell’s pant leg at the cuff beneath the tire.

About the Author:

Howard Weiner is a recent addition to the literary genre of fiction. Writing mysteries, thrillers, crimes—with a touch of romance—an approach described by one reader as “one bubble off.”

Many authors sharing the genre have characters whose fortune is determined by others. They literally have dodged the bullet that otherwise would have killed them. Weiner’s characters make their own fortune—good or bad—and they live with the results.

Weiner’s own experiences are blessed with no small number of noteworthy characters and events. He brings these slightly off-kilter individuals to life, complete with their own stories and dramas. Like the child prodigy in his first novel, "It Is Las Vegas After All", who comes to the starting edge of adulthood and then loses the approval of his doting parents, the sponsorship of one of America’s great institutions of higher education, and gains the enmity of his girlfriend’s father—an international arms dealer—to become a home-grown terrorist operating on U.S. Soil.

A survivor of rich, nuanced bureaucracies in the public and private sector, Weiner writes about characters whose career choices and decisions are morally questionable. A student of personal behavior in complex circumstances, Weiner brings these often cringe-worthy characters to life. Some are amoral, others immoral in a narrow slice of their lives, yet they otherwise look and act like people we all know from work or even childhood. Like one of the female leads in his novel, "Serendipity Opportunity", an out-of-the-box thinker who flunks most of life’s basic relationship tests, yet she is someone you never want pursuing you in the cause of justice. There’s a former foreign security official who uses his protected status as a witness for federal prosecutors to provide cover for his own mayhem and murder in Weiner’s third novel, "Bad Money".

Many of Weiner’s stories are born out of real life events: The mix-up in luggage claim at the airport in, "Bad Money", the chronic high school slacker in "Serendipity Opportunity" whose one stroke of good fortune creates his opportunity to perpetrate a complex series of frauds, or the brilliant student in "It Is Las Vegas After All" who uses his prodigious talents toward an evil end.

As a former federal official, Weiner can neither confirm nor deny having the highest security clearances in classified security programs. Yet, his knowledge of the dark web, criminal organizations, and security organizations takes stories from the popular press to the next level.

Author Q&A @CRMoss | Double D Ranch Tales by C. R. Moss & R.M. Sotera Book Tour & $15 Amazon GC #Giveaway | @SDSXXTours Presents #ContemporaryRomance #ConRom

A Quick Interview with C.R. Moss

– Double D Ranch Tales blog tour

1) Tell us about yourself.

Hi everyone, my name is Casey, and I write under the names C.R. Moss for erotic and mainstream romance and Casey Moss for mainstream dark fiction (horror, suspense, urban fantasy) and sometimes the stories have an erotic flare to them. My professional bio for C.R.: An eccentric and eclectic writer, C.R. Moss pens stories for the mainstream and erotic romance markets, giving readers a choice of sweet, savory or spicy reads, usually within a sub-genre or two — paranormal, sci-fi/fantasy, time travel, or western flare. The bio for my other persona: Casey Moss delves into the darker aspects of life in her writing, sometimes basing the stories on reality, sometimes on myth. No matter the path, her stories will take you on a journey from the light-hearted paranormal to dark things unspeakable. What waits around the corner? Come explore…

2) What genre do you write and why?

As C.R. Moss, I like to dabble in a bunch of different sub-genres under the erotic romance umbrella, though I tend to lean more toward contemporary, time travel, western and chick-lit. Being able to take from different sub-genres allows me to go in the direction the story calls for.

3) What made you become a writer and how did you get your start?

For a very brief period of time, I had ideas of becoming a teacher or an astronaut. Both occurred before the age of ten. But for the most part, I knew I wanted to write at a young age, as early as I learned to read. I was always cooking up stories to entertain myself in the rural area I lived in. Had to since there were no other kids around to play with. My defining moment came when I received an A in English in grade school. I was just shy of being a teenager when I had my ‘calling.’ Ever since then, most of my choices in life have revolved around my goal of becoming a full-time fiction writer and being published.

Upon my ‘calling’ I wrote a story for a magazine. It’d been rejected, but that was my start. After that, I began studying the craft of writing. It started with working on the school newspaper in middle school to creative writing classes and Teens Art Festivals in high school. I received a BA in Communications, Information and Library Studies from Rutgers College with a strong concentration in English Lit/Writing and Interpersonal Communications/PR. Studying under the mentorship of Terri Valentine (author of ‘Sands of Time,’ a Zebra Historical Romance), I honed my novel writing skills. In the mid to late 2000s, I finally put my foot down, got over my nerves and took the plunge into submitting stories to publishers. I’ve been published since 2008.

4) Tell us about your series.

The germ of an idea for the Double D Ranch Tales series started when I took a writing vacation at a working ranch and was around the cowboys, campfires, cattle, horses, eating outdoors… Well, you get the picture. So, my muse started asking, “What if?” What if there were a couple of friends who went to a ranch to get away from their lives for a bit? What if they hooked up with a couple of sexy cowboys? My writing partner and I had already worked on one project together, and when I got home, I called her up and said, “Guess what we’re writing next.” From there we came up with the ranch, the characters and how the heroines chose that ranch to go to and the rest is history.

5) What have you found to be the most challenging?

In writing with a co-partner - getting our schedules to sync up.
In writing erotic romance - sometimes the sex scenes. The mechanics are okay, but it's getting the right emotions and sensual aspects across at the right moments.
In publishing - sometimes all the promotion an author has to do.

A Few fun questions…

1) Does size matter?

IMO, yes. Too small ("Are you even there?") or too big ("You're splitting me in two!") wouldn't be fun at all and would detract from the experience.

2) Flowers or Chocolate?

Chocolate. Unless the flowers are fake. I don't mind fake flowers because they last longer, and I don't feel are a waste of money regardless of the sentiment behind them.

3) E-book or paperback?

Depends upon the story, the author and my mood. I enjoy collecting both. :)
